The Barrett Clay Works National Cup Show focuses on interpretations of a utilitarian object both functional and sculptural that has been part of daily life for centuries. The event celebrates the creativity of contemporary ceramic artists through their interpretations of this simple form.
The exhibition's juror, Adam Welch, Director of Greenwich House Pottery, says "The field of contemporary ceramics is fertile ground - I cannot think of a time when ceramic practice has been as diverse or wide ranging. There is vast experimentation. From installation, site specific, interventionist, performance, mixed media, happenings, sculpture, vessels, and pottery, nothing appears to be too much or too little. And artists are taking risks, not just accepting what is offered up from the canon. It's an exciting time to be
involved and everyone is getting involved."
Barrett Clay Works instructor and the show's curator, Eileen Sackman adds "Entries in the show this year represent the great diversity of approaches Welch has noted. Some employ relatively new techniques for ceramics, such as screen-printing and linoleum cuts. Others result from traditional techniques such as soda and wood-firing. It's exciting to see many of the techniques we teach here at Barrett Clay Works implemented by professional artists to create such beautiful and innovative works."
Barrett Clay Works offers a wide range of ceramics classes for all ages including many for young people. Eileen Sackman teaches classes in Basic and Intermediate Wheel Throwing, Alternative Firing, and Salt-Firing. Some of her work, as well as work by other instructors and students, will be on display at the Clay Works during the National Cup Show's run.
The full Barrett School of Art catalog, which includes information on courses taught at the Clay Works as well as the Barrett Art Center and offsite, is available online CLICK HERE or call 845-471-2550 to request a catalog by mail.
